Note*   The spelling of Margueritte's last name is not confirmed. It appears as Verluguet in the marriage record of her daughter, Christine, to Joseph Gresse. However, in other records the name appears as Vertigoit, Vertugais, Vertigué and Verdegué. One of these may be the correct spelling. Note*   Anna Elisabetha is the cousin of Johann Heinrich Weigold and their respective children, Anna Christina Mennel and Johann Jacob Weigold, are the parents of August Johann Weigold. Anna is another whose name has been spelled two ways. It was Weygold in her birth record and Weigold in her marriage record.

From the birth records of the children, it is possible to determined that Elisabetha and Michael had at least two more children. Their first, a girl, was born prior to Johann Christian in 1809. The other, also a girl, would have been born between Anna Christina and Johann Friedrich.

The date of Anna Elisabetha's death was noted in the margin of her birth record. This date has not been verified through comparison with the actual death record.

Note*   In the birth record of Anna Maria Weigold (B: 14 Jul 1752) the father is shown as "Friedrich Weil." It is a common practice in german records to abbreviate a word by partially spelling it and then adding an "l." at the end. Although, abbreviating a name is not common, it is assumed that that is what has been done in this case and the name Weigold was abbreviated as Weil. There is no other records of a Friedrich Weil and Anna Maria's birth fits in nicely with the other children, so this will be the assumed case until proven otherwise.

Note*   There were enough "distorted" facts in his birth record that it seemed necessary to confirm that, indeed, the record for the correct John Weigold was found. It was known from the 1900 census that John's brother, Fred, was born in May of 1856 so he was used as a check. His birth was found recorded on the date of 3 May 1856 and it listed his parents as Jacob Weigold and Christina Mennel. With this corroborating information it is felt that the record for John is the correct one.

Harold Weigold's THE WEIGOLD FAMILY RECORD states that John immigrated to the U.S. in 1867. In the 1900 census claims that he immigrated in 1870. However, an August Weygold (age 18 from Hesse) did arrive in New York from La Havre, on 7 Sep 1867 on the ship 'Atlanta'. He listed his occupation as 'Farmer'. This is presumed to be our August Johann Weigold.

After John and Bertha (Bernardina) were married they lived in Brooklyn, New York at 102 Debevois St. where he was a butcher. This is according to the 1880 census. In 1888, on 14 November, they moved to Tolland, Conn. where they bought and operated a farm. The address of that farm is now 255 Weigold Road, Tolland. The road being named after its most numerous residents.
